I love stories like these.

Police were called to restore calm in eastern England after a cash machine started dispensing twice the money its customers were asking for.
The Lloyds TSB cash machine in Ipswich began dispensing "free money" to customers Wednesday after the bank branch had closed for the evening.
As word of the fault spread, a crowd began to gather, prompting arguments among those trying to use the faulty machine.
Police were called in to keep watch until the bank's staff could take the machine out of service.
A Lloyds' spokesman said the machine had been "misdispensing" cash for only a "short time". The spokesman added: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
Some 30 people are thought to have benefitted from the glitch.

It is not clear how much money the bank lost, or if it will be able to recover the funds.
Emma Hutchinson, from Ipswich, told the Ipswich Star: "Word got around pretty quickly. My friend asked for £40 and the machine gave out £80."
She told the newspaper that she went to see if the rumour was true but decided not to withdraw any money herself.
Lloyds Banking Group, which had to be bailed out by the British government to the tune of £21 billion at the height of the global financial crisis, said in a results statement Thursday that it had cut interim net losses to £676 million on the back of restructuring measures.
Responding to reports of the faulty Lloyds cash machine, one Twitter user, @FizzySparkler, commented: "Nice to see one bank is giving back."

Lucky bastards!!

Only time i was that lucky was when I witnessed a girl who obviously had a bit too much to drink or was getting over a real bad hangover withdraw about £300 from the ATM and forgot to take it.

Unfortunately for me, one of the guys in my group of friends decided to open his mouth and tell her she forgot to take his money.

We didnt get any reward, not even a thanks!! but we made sure the guy that opened his mouth wouldnt open it again in such a hurry if faced with the same situation again.

Obviously these things happen once in a bluemoon. things have moved on since - I dont hang out with the same group of people anymore but more then a decade since it happened, its never happened again.

Sometimes being the good samaritan doesnt pay off.

tsk, your friend was right to tell the girl about her money. Stealing from some mega corporation like a bank which fucks us over anyway and wouldn't even notice it is one thing, but from a person or a small business is quite another and I would never condone it.

Of course, in hindsight, the girl was a total bitch for being so damned ungrateful, but there's no way to know that beforehand and most people are grateful, at least to some extent, making her the exception.

I once took £10 from an ATM and got back £20. Of course, I was really slow and only realized that I should go back for more long after I'd gone home. Yeah, I felt a complete muppet.

Back then i was young, and we all make bad decisions at that age.

when stuff like this happeneds i tend to make quick judgements like if the person looks like the kind of person that would miss that kind of money or If I know/have met or seen that person before and know that he or she is a bit of asshole or bitch to other people around her.

Obviously Id never seen the girl in my life but that wouldnt stop me taking her money as the dude she got in the car with was driving an expensive BMW or Merc.

*shrugs*

Though I must clarify that i would NEVER go out of my way to take someones property or posessions. Its just that oppotunity literally walked up and slapped me in the face with a £300 wad of cash. Im not going to turn away and say "no" to it

If i forget to take my money from the ATM i expect no different. With smaller amounts that arent worth taking id always tell the person they forgot their money. but that wasnt no £50 or £100 in notes. it was as thick as DVD case!!

A few months ago, I pulled up to my bank's ATM and found that some muppet had left her card in the machine - and still logged in. Lucky for her I'm an honest person (the security camera at the ATM helps a lot with that ;) ). I ejected the card and took it to the bank the next day. The teller looked at the name on the card and said "Oh yeah, we know her." Her tone told me "She's done this before." Probably too busy babbling on her cell phone to bother retrieving her card....
